How to play Canfield Solitaire

Canfield (also called Demon Patience) deals 13 cards into a reserve pile, one random card to start the first foundation, and four more to the tableau. The rank of that starting card becomes the starting rank for all four foundations, which build up by suit with King wrapping to Ace. Draw three cards at a time from a large stock.

The rules in short

13 reserve cards face-up in a stack; only the top card is playable. 4 tableau columns of 1 card each. 1 random starting card on a foundation. 34 cards in the stock.
Foundations build up by suit from the starting rank, wrapping K→A if needed.
Tableau builds down in alternating colors. Any card goes into an empty column.
Click the stock to draw up to three cards. Only the top waste card is playable.
When the stock is empty, click it to recycle the waste and draw again. No recycle limit.
The reserve top card is always available to play to a foundation or the tableau.

Tips

Get the reserve empty as fast as possible — cards beneath the top are blocked and the reserve can stall the whole game.
The random starting rank means planning the wrapping sequence in your head: if the start is 7, foundations go 7 8 9 10 J Q K A 2 3 4 5 6.
Keep at least one empty tableau column open to manoeuvre the reserve top and waste top.

Questions

What is the starting rank?

It is random — whatever rank the first foundation card happened to be. All four foundations must begin with that same rank.

Can I see the wrapped sequence on screen?

Yes. Each foundation shows its starting rank label so you always know where each suit is headed.

Is Canfield usually winnable?

No. Most Canfield deals cannot be won. The reserve and draw-3 stock make the game largely luck-driven.
